Visit to Charterhouse, London Colchester Civic Society Monday 01 June 2020

A visit to Charterhouse with Colchester Civic Society in June. Date to be advised.

Charterhouse was built as a monastery on the site of the Black death burial ground, flourished until the Dissolution when it became a mansion for wealthy noblemen and a refuge for Royalty until 1611 when Thomas Sutton bought the Charterhouse and established the foundation which now bears his name. Charterhouse is a wonderful and peaceful oasis in the heart of the City. The visit will concentrate on the architecture and the history of the place.
